Sunscreen vs Sunblock, What’s the Difference?

Sunscreen vs Sunblock , What’s the difference?

Sunscreen is a cream or lotion which is applied on the skin to protect it from harmful UV rays. It penetrates the skin and has a chemical reaction to prevent burning.

It has chemical active ingredients that were developed for their ease of use and inexpensive ingredients.

While Sunblock is often referred to as physical sunscreen or physical blockers.

It contains zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Sunblock stays on the surface of the skin and blocks or diverts the sun’s rays. They protect you once you apply them unto your skin. They create a physical barrier on top of the skin to block damaging UV rays away from the skin. All physical UV filters block both UVA and UVB rays.

What are the Ingredients?

Sunblocks contain Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, both are safe and very stable formulas when exposed to the sun. They are approved by experts as safe for use in sun protection products. They are not absorbed by the skin, that’s why they do not cause reactions. People with sensitive skin prefer sunblock.

Sunscreens usually include active ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. There are difference between K-Beauty and American Sunscreen ingredients though.

What does SPF mean?

Sun Protection Factor or SPF is the estimated maximum amount of UV radiation that the product can protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) B rays.

The number indicates the number of minutes in direct sun exposure before the sun’s UV rays turns your skin reddish. Other ranking specify the level of protection.

Don’t forget that SPF only indicates protection from UVB (burning rays) and does not indicate any protection from UVA (aging rays).

UVA and UVB rays are two basic types of ultraviolet rays that reach the earth’s surface.

UVB rays are responsible for producing sunburns. The UVB rays also responsible for causing skin cancers, including malignant melanoma.

UVA rays exposure does not cause sunburn, but it does penetrate deeply into the skin and contributes to chronic skin damages, wrinkle formation, and skin cancer.
